The practice of resolving cases outside of the formal criminal justice system, with the aim of reducing stigmatisation and impact on a criminal record. The terms out of court resolutions and out of court disposals are often used.
Diversion is sometimes used to refer only to 'informal' out of court resolutions, such as those which result in a no further action, or triage, but it is also used to refer to all out of court resolutions, including 'formal' ones such as youth cautions, youth conditional cautions and community resolutions.
