Court Confidence for Youth Justice Practitioners – A practical introduction

New to court work in youth justice? This interactive online workshop is designed to build your confidence, knowledge, and practical skills so you can navigate court proceedings with clarity and professionalism.

Whether you’re preparing your first report or attending court for the first time, this session will guide you through what to expect and how to contribute effectively. We break down the court process, demystify legal language, and explore the distinct role of all professionals in supporting children through proceedings.

Key areas of learning include:

  • Key legal principles underpinning youth court practice
  • Roles and responsibilities of everyone in court, including magistrates, judges, legal representatives, and YJS practitioners
  • Procedure in the youth court, from first hearing through to outcome
  • An introduction to bail and remand, including decision-making and advocacy
  • An introduction to sentencing, including how courts approach outcomes for children

Expertly facilitated by YJLC, this highly interactive session combines legal insight with real-world scenarios, giving you the chance to ask questions, work through practical examples, and learn alongside peers from services across the country.

Perfect for new starters or those looking to refresh their skills, this workshop will help you feel more confident, prepared, and effective in court—so you can better support children and achieve positive outcomes.
