Our expert-led half-day day course provides a comprehensive overview of the legal framework surrounding Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE), equipping practitioners with the knowledge and skills to navigate and advocate for vulnerable children and young people effectively. With the most recent review of child criminal exploitation having found that the current system is failing victims, this course has been tailored specifically to provide support for youth justice services in this increasingly complex and concerning area.

The course covers

  • An overview of the current law and guidance including the Modern Slavery Act, changes brought in as a result of the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 and the Sentencing Act.
  • The role of adultification
  • An understanding of safeguarding and welfare duties within services, enabling them to effectively support children at risk of or affected by criminal exploitation.
  • Interactive case studies and examples of best practice.

This course offers timely and tailored support to anyone working with young people experiencing or at risk of CCE and consistently receives positive feedback from past participants.

The course will be delivered by Shauneen Lambe and Aika Stephenson.

Shauneen Lambe is a barrister in England and Wales and an attorney in the USA. She is the former joint chief executive officer of Just for Kids Law (2005-2018) and co-authored Youth Justice Law and Practice (LAG, 2019). In 2022, Shauneen began coordinating the Child Law Network, a group of legal NGOs from across the UK, with the aim of it being a leading source of legal expertise and leadership in respect of the law as it relates to children and lawyers for children. Before working in the UK, Shauneen worked at the Louisiana Crisis Assistance Center representing those facing the death penalty and helped Clive Stafford Smith set up his NGO - Reprieve. Shauneen is a director of the Youth Justice Legal Centre.

Aika Stephenson founded Just for Kids Law alongside Shauneen Lambe in 2006 and remains the Legal Director. She is a solicitor and youth justice expert with over 20 years of experience representing young people in criminal proceedings. Aika started her career working for the Children’s Society at Feltham Young Offenders Institute as an Advocate before going on to the Westminster Youth Offending Team.

Aika represents young people at every stage of the criminal justice system, from the police station to the Supreme Court. She is driven by a determination to bring about systemic change that benefits all children and young people caught up in the criminal justice system.
