Guidance on speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in the youth justice system

The Youth Justice Board (YJB) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists have issued joint guidance on speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) in the youth justice system.

This guidance is for practitioners working in youth offending teams (YOT) and secure accommodation for young people. It aims to raise awareness of young people’s speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and how SLCN may affect a young person’s ability to engage and comply with requirements placed upon them. It will also identify some useful approaches to help tackle this issue.

The Communication Trust’s leaflet Sentence Trouble provides a helpful overview of issues arising when communicating with children at police stations and at court.
