This is a device attached to a person’s body that can monitor that they are inside, in a certain area, during the hours of their curfew.

Electronic monitoring can be imposed as a condition of bail, but for a child it can only be imposed if certain conditions are met:

  1. they are 12 years old or above; 
  2. they are:
    •  charged with or have been convicted of a violent, sexual or terrorism offence, or an offence punishable in the case of an adult with imprisonment for a term of fourteen years or more; or;
    •  are charged with/convicted of one or more imprisonable offences which, to­gether with any convictions for impris­onable offences, amount to (or would if convicted) to a recent history of repeat­edly committing imprisonable offences while remanded on bail or to custodial remand; 
  3. electronic monitoring is available in the area, and
  4. the YJS inform the court that the impo­sition of the requirement would be suitable.
