A person who takes responsibility to pay an amount of money if an accused person doesn’t do something the court has ordered them to do, for example, turn up at court on a specific date after being on bail.
A surety will normally have to show to the court that they have the required amount of money in their possession, that may be taken by the court if necessary. Parents can provide a surety for a sum up to £50 for a child who is under 17 years of age, if that child will not reach 17 before they are due to surrender to custody.
