If someone is in custody they are ‘locked up’. This can be in a cell in a police station or at court or for a custodial (prison) sentence.
Children who are sent to youth detention accommodation (YDA) or given a custodial (prison) sentence will be sent to a Secure Children’s Home (SCH), Secure Training Centre (STC) or a Young Offenders’ Institution (YOI) depending on their age and vulnerability. Placement decisions are made by the Youth Justice Board (YJB).
