A person is given a prison sentence, but instead of going to prison, they can remain in the community provided they have to comply with certain strict conditions for a certain period of time. If they breach the requirements, or commit another offence in that time, then they can be sent to prison for the period of time that they were given in their original sentence.
Suspended sentences are only given to adults. Children (aged 10-17) cannot receive suspended sentences.
